Celebrating 10 Years of KeiterBennett Publishers LLC: A Decade of Stories, Growth, and Representation
Share
In 2024, we at KeiterBennett Publishers LLC (KBP) celebrated a milestone—ten years of storytelling, innovation, and pushing the boundaries of representation in the publishing world. What began in May 2014 as a heartfelt mission to fill a gap in the literary world has blossomed into a family-run publishing house that uplifts Black voices and creates mirror books for readers of all ages. As we reflect on the past decade, we are proud of the stories we’ve told, the readers we’ve inspired, and the legacy we’ve built. But we’re just getting started.
The Birth of a Mission
KeiterBennett Publishers LLC was born from a simple but profound question from our founder's son: “Why aren’t there books like Harry Potter with characters that look like me?” This question lit a spark in Erwin T. Hurst, Sr., an entrepreneur and avid reader, who realized the need for stories that celebrated Black identity, culture, and creativity. With a leap of faith and a commitment to making a difference, KBP was formed in Hartford, Connecticut.
Our first publication, Slicker Than Most, was a romance novel written as part of a friendly challenge between independent publishers. While it marked the beginning of our journey, the mission has since evolved, shifting focus to young readers and underserved audiences.
A Timeline of Noteworthy Moments
Over the past ten years, we’ve achieved milestones that have shaped our path:
- 2014: KeiterBennett Publishers LLC is founded.
- 2014: Released Slicker Than Most, setting the foundation for a publishing house committed to diversity.
- 2019: Published The Howling Happenings, the first book in the Kizzy Kloo Mystery Series, a chapter book series co-written by Rell Erwin and his daughter Evie Erin.
- 2020: With the global pandemic in full swing, KBP Adapted to the challenges of the pandemic with the owner/head writer pivoting back to writing adult-targeted novels.
- 2024: Released Bellevue Street Preacher, showcasing Rell Erwin’s versatility in genres and achieving notable success.
Stories That Matter
Our books reflect our commitment to inclusivity and creativity. From the Kizzy Kloo Mystery Series, which brought smiles and imagination to children’s classrooms, to Bellevue Street Preacher, an adult mystery that captivated readers, each story has a purpose. Rashad Taji’s poetry collections, Black Symphony and Liquid Swords, have also left an indelible mark, showcasing the richness of Black artistry.
We’ve seen tremendous success with our Writing in the Clouds series, empowering young readers to express themselves through writing and creativity. These books are just the beginning of what KBP aims to achieve.
Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond
As we step into 2025, KBP is doubling down on our mission. The year kicks off with the release of I Pledge Allegiance to My Ancestors by Rashad Taji, a powerful poetry book launching on Inauguration Day. The first fantasy book in our new YA series, currently under the working title Project ASODAD, will also debut. This project represents a bold step into the genre of fantasy, featuring a 21-year-old protagonist navigating a world of gods, magic, and destiny. These are just two of the many exciting projects on the horizon.
We’re also launching a community initiative, Read with Rell, designed to bring people of all ages together to rediscover the joy of reading.
A Message to Our Readers
The past ten years were the setup for an even brighter decade ahead. We are deeply grateful to our readers, who have supported us through every milestone and pivot. The next ten years are dedicated to bringing you more stories that inspire, uplift, and entertain.
